Ralph's Wood

A proper Somerset woodland just outside Highbridge, Ralph's Wood is the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a nature reserve that feels genuinely wild without demanding peak fitness - mostly flat walking through mixed woodland with a decent network of paths that let you potter about for anything from twenty minutes to a couple of hours depending on your mood.

The trees are dense enough to block out the sky in places, and there's genuine biodiversity here. Birdwatchers will find it worth their time, and walkers passing through between Highbridge and the coast appreciate the shelter and shade. Families with young kids find it manageable because the paths are reasonably clear, though it's muddy after rain so wellies are sensible. It's free to wander - no gates or visitor centre that I could find, just a nature reserve you access on foot.

What makes it work is that it doesn't try to be anything fancy. There's no café, no gift shop, no themed routes with interpretive signs at every turn. Just woodland doing what woodland does. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Laurel Farm Glamping is barely a mile away, or the cluster around Burnham-on-Sea within three miles - it's a genuinely useful spot for burning off energy without heading miles inland. Come early morning if you want to spot wildlife. Afternoon visits work fine too if you're just after a walk.
