The Shrubbery

The Shrubbery is a proper woodland walk just outside Northampton, the sort of place locals know but visitors often miss. It's forest in the best sense - dense enough to feel like you've properly escaped town, open enough that you won't feel claustrophobic trudging through undergrowth. The paths meander through established woodland with decent canopy cover, ideal for a morning ramble when the light filters through in that particular way only old trees manage.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not dramatic landscape or ruined castles - it's just good, straightforward woodland with room to stretch your legs for an hour or two without needing specialist kit or climbing boots. The terrain is manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might struggle with muddier sections depending on the season. Spring and autumn probably trump summer here; you'll avoid the worst of the undergrowth growth and the midges that can be proper annoying in July.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping options like Lakeview (2.4 miles away) or Bunkers Hill Farm, this makes a decent morning out before heading back for lunch. It's free, as far as I can tell, and there's no official opening hours nonsense. Just rock up. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing, less if you just want a quick circuit to clear your head between other Northamptonshire activities.
