Cottesbrooke Hall & Gardens

The drive up to Cottesbrooke Hall catches you off guard - suddenly you're rolling through proper Northamptonshire countryside, past sheep and hedgerows, and there it is. An 18th-century country house that feels genuinely lived-in rather than museum-like, with the kind of gardens that make you understand why people spend weekends wandering round stately homes.

Inside, the rooms are packed with furniture and paintings accumulated over centuries, which means it doesn't feel sterile or roped-off. You can actually see how people might have moved through these spaces. The library is exceptional if you're into that sort of thing - all leather spines and proper history. Outside, the gardens roll away in layers: formal areas closer to the house, then it opens up into parkland with views across the valley.

It's genuinely worth the trip from Northampton - only a few miles out - especially if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby glamping spots like Lakeview or Moon Valley. A good half-day visit: house takes an hour or so indoors, then another hour wandering the grounds if you're not rushing. Families with older kids do well here; toddlers might get frustrated with the "don't touch" aspect.

Check opening times before you go - it's not open year-round, which catches people out. Admission isn't cheap, but the collections justify it. On a clear day the views from the gardens alone make the stop worthwhile.
