The Shepherd's Cottage

A stone cottage sits alone in the Brecon Beacons foothills near Crickhowell, unremarkable at first glance but oddly compelling once you know its story. The Shepherd's Cottage is exactly what the name suggests - a modest dwelling that shepherds used for centuries while tending flocks on these Welsh hillsides. There's no visitor centre or café, no gift shop flogging postcards. You simply find it, stand outside, and feel the weight of generations who sheltered here.

Historians and walkers get the most from a visit. The landscape tells you everything - this spot was chosen for a reason, commanding views across open moorland with stone walls running in every direction. If you're based at Cwmdu Campsite or Bryndu, both excellent choices for a Powys holiday, the cottage works beautifully as a destination walk rather than a destination in itself. The surrounding Beacons landscape is the real draw, and having a specific building to aim for gives the ramble proper purpose.

Access appears free - there's no formal opening hours because it's a historic landmark rather than a staffed attraction. Allow an hour to walk there, poke around, and walk back depending on where you start. Go when the weather's decent; upland Powys can turn grim fast, and you'll want to actually see the views. Don't expect facilities or interpretation boards. What you get instead is authenticity and solitude, which honestly beats most carefully curated tourist spots.
