The Scrambles Nature Reserve

The River Wear cuts through this nature reserve like it's got somewhere to be, and frankly, the Scrambles lives up to its name - it's a proper outdoor playground rather than a formal visitor attraction. You're looking at rocky outcrops, wooded banks, and sections where the water tumbles over stone in ways that make you understand why locals come here to scramble about.

It's genuinely free to access and close enough to Durham that you could easily slot it into a morning before heading into town. Allow a couple of hours if you're actually scrambling - less if you just fancy a riverside wander. The terrain is rough in places, so decent footwear isn't optional, and parents with very small children might find it frustrating rather than fun.

Walkers and outdoor types will get far more from this than casual strollers. Photographers love the rocky formations, especially when the light hits the water right. There's something raw about it - no tea rooms, no interpretation boards, just you and the river doing what rivers do.

Staying at Durham Grange, just under a mile away, makes this an obvious add-on to your park holiday. It's the kind of spot that rewards a proper explore rather than a quick look-round. The Wear Valley has plenty of other walks nearby, so you could easily build a full day around scrambling here and tackling longer trails elsewhere. Scrambling season is genuinely spring through autumn - winter makes it slippery and considerably less appealing.
