The Royal St George's Golf Club

Royal St George's sits on the Kent coast near Sandwich, one of England's most famous golf courses and a Open Championship venue since 1894. If you're not a golfer, don't bother trying to get inside - it's a private members' club and casual visitors won't get past the gates. That said, the clubhouse and the dramatic links landscape are worth seeing from the outside, and the course itself is genuinely spectacular to walk around if you manage to get a member's invite.

The real appeal here is for serious golf enthusiasts or anyone keen on sporting history. The course has hosted the Open eleven times, and you can feel the weight of that tradition just looking at the place. The location, right on the edge of the English Channel, means the weather's often bracing and the wind plays havoc with your game - or so I'm told by the golfers I know.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Sandwich Leisure is barely a mile and a half away - you could easily make an afternoon of exploring Sandwich town itself, which is far more accessible and genuinely lovely. The dunes and coastal walks around the area are free and infinitely more welcoming to non-members.

Realistically, this is a pilgrimage spot for golf obsessives only. Everyone else should enjoy the views from afar and spend their time at the parks and the medieval town instead.
