The Peace Oak

Near Dunmow sits an ancient oak that's been around since the 11th century - proper old, in other words. The Peace Oak is gnarled and substantial, the sort of tree that makes you do the maths and realise how many centuries of rain and storms it's weathered. Legend has it that this was where disputes were settled back in medieval times, disputes resolved under the branches of something that couldn't be moved or bought or argued with - just a tree, standing there.

It's not a major production, this one. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no staged photo opportunities. Just the oak itself, often surrounded by a fence to keep it from being worn down by too many hands. You can spend five minutes or twenty depending on how much you want to sit with it and think about time passing.

Walkers will appreciate the spot as a destination on a longer ramble through the Essex countryside - it's the kind of thing worth navigating towards if you're already exploring the area rather than making a trip specifically for it. The setting is agricultural rather than dramatic, which is honest at least.

If you're based at Dairymeade Farm Glamping just down the road, it's a pleasant enough way to spend an hour when you fancy leaving the site. Free to visit, naturally. Go midweek if you can - fewer crowds bothering the old thing. The real appeal is the weight of history and the quiet it offers, not the view or the facilities.
