The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene - Whatlington

The church sits quietly on a gentle slope just outside Battle, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. St Mary Magdalene is a proper medieval gem - all flint and stone with that weathered patience only centuries can give a building. Inside, it's surprisingly intimate. The chancel still has traces of 14th-century work, and there's a real sense of continuity walking past pews that generations have occupied. What gets you is how genuinely unrushed it feels. No gift shop, no crowds fighting for angles. Just the space itself.

History types will appreciate the architectural bones - the tower's solid Norman work, later alterations that show how parishes evolved. It's the sort of place where you can actually think, which is rare. The churchyard has proper character too, with older graves and trees that belong here rather than having been planted last decade.

This works best as a detour rather than a destination in itself. Half an hour maximum inside, then walk around the grounds if the weather's decent. It pairs well with exploring Battle itself, which is close enough for a morning or afternoon. If you're camping at The Original Hut Company just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch with genuine interest rather than tourist theatre.
