The Old Brickworks

The Old Brickworks sits just outside Rochester, a sprawling nature reserve that's quietly reclaimed what industry once tore up. Walk the paths here and you're basically treading through a forgotten corner of Kent where clay pits have transformed into ponds, scrub, and grassland over the decades.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow afternoon rather than a rushed visit. You'll spot water birds on the ponds, maybe a newt if you're lucky, and plenty of wildflowers depending on the season. The woodland sections feel proper atmospheric, all twisted willows and overgrown edges. Not the manicured countryside - this is nature doing its own thing after the diggers moved out.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's no visitor centre or café, which is part of the charm but also means you need to be self-sufficient. Families with young kids might find an hour enough unless they're really into pond-dipping. Birdwatchers will know to bring binoculars and patience.

It works well if you're staying at Sheerness Holiday Park nearby and fancy something quieter than a typical Kent attraction. Best visited in spring or early summer when the wildflowers are out and the birds are active. Bring decent shoes - the paths can be boggy after rain, and there's nowhere to dry off. Free to roam, though checking for any seasonal closures before you go is wise.
