The New Victoria Theatre

The New Victoria Theatre sits right in Woking town centre, and it's the sort of place that actually delivers on a night out - proper West End-standard shows, not some second-rate touring production. You're looking at musicals, plays, comedy, pantomime depending on the season. The building itself is modern enough that you won't be squinting at the stage through a pillar, and the acoustics are genuinely decent.

This works well if you're camping nearby at Warren Farm or one of the other parks within a couple of miles and fancy something more substantial than a pub quiz. Families with kids gravitated towards the pantomime run when I last checked the schedule, though the theatre hosts everything from Shakespeare to big commercial musicals throughout the year.

You'll need to check what's on and book in advance - it's not a drop-in sort of place. Tickets vary wildly depending on the production, so there's no flat rate to mention. The theatre itself opens from 10am through to 11pm, though you'd obviously only be catching a show in the evening. Allow a couple of hours from start to finish, including a bit of time to settle in before curtain up.

From any of the caravan parks within five or six miles - Chertsey, Weybridge, Chapel Farm - it's an easy enough drive into Woking. Not the most picturesque destination in Surrey, but if you want proper theatre rather than just hiking and countryside, this is where to head.
