The Marlpits

The Marlpits is a proper woodland walk just outside Shifnal, the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards anyone who bothers to find it. It's a mixed forest with a bit of history tucked underneath - old marl extraction pits from centuries back, which is how it got its name. The ground undulates in odd ways thanks to all that digging, creating natural hollows and ridges that make the walk more interesting than your average flat forest trail.

You're looking at a decent ramble through mature trees, with paths that meander rather than march. It's walker territory, really - the sort of spot where you can stretch your legs for an hour or so without needing to plan a military operation. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after a while, though the uneven terrain keeps things from feeling completely dull. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need.

If you're staying at High Onn Holiday Park nearby, it's worth the short drive over for a morning or afternoon break from the caravan. Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a Staffordshire trip. Go on a dry day - the paths can get boggy, and muddy woodland isn't anyone's idea of lovely. Spring and autumn are probably your best bets weather-wise, though it's peaceful enough whenever you visit.
