Butter Cross

Historically minded visitors will find it worth a ten-minute stop, especially if you're already exploring Shifnal's town centre - the building tells you something genuine about medieval and early modern English commerce that you won't get from reading about it. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own; it's not interactive or dramatic, just a solid old structure. The real appeal is context - how it sits within the wider market town landscape.

There's no entrance fee or specific opening hours since it's an outdoor public monument in the town square. If you're staying at Stanmore Hall or Ted's Farm just a few miles away, Shifnal makes an easy afternoon run. Combine it with a proper look around the town's other period buildings and you've got a reasonable couple of hours. Parking's straightforward near the square. Go on a market day if you can - Thursdays and Saturdays still draw traders, and that's when you'll actually understand what the Cross was built for.
