Weston Park

The approach to Weston Park from Shifnal takes you through proper countryside - the sort of landscape that makes you remember why you bothered leaving the motorway. This is a working nature reserve, not a manicured visitor attraction, which means you get actual wildlife rather than a tidy interpretation centre.

The reserve itself spreads across woodland and grassland, good for a solid couple of hours' wandering if you're into birds and butterflies. Spring's the obvious choice if migration's your thing, but autumn brings its own appeal when the light gets low and the place feels less busy. Paths wind through without being fussy about it - you can ramble properly here rather than shuffle along a designated route.

It's genuinely worth the detour if you're based at one of the nearby sites. Ted's Farm and High Onn Holiday Park are both within easy driving distance, and Oakland just over the way, so you could easily string together a few reserves or country walks without much hassle. The whole area around here - Shropshire's not far - is decent walking country. Families with older kids who actually enjoy spotting things will find it worthwhile. Younger ones might get restless after an hour unless you're lucky with what you spot. Worth checking what's been seen recently before you go - makes the whole thing more engaging when you've got a target bird in mind.
