The Law

The Law is a proper hill walk rather than a leisurely stroll, rising sharply above Forfar with views that stretch across Angus and into the Highlands beyond. The summit's not tremendously high - you're looking at around 300 metres - but the climb up is steep enough to feel like real work, especially if the ground's boggy after rain.

Once you reach the top, the payoff is genuine. On a clear day you can pick out the Cairngorms to the north, and the patchwork of farmland falling away below has a quiet appeal that catches you off guard. There's an old cairn at the summit, weathered smooth by centuries of wind and walkers.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids who don't mind a slog, or serious hill walkers using it as a warm-up for bigger Cairngorm adventures. Allow about an hour to the top from the car park and factor in another 45 minutes for the descent - take it slowly on the way down, the path gets loose. Avoid it after heavy rain when it turns into a muddy slog.
