The Islands at Chester Zoo

The Islands at Chester Zoo is exactly what it sounds like - a series of animal enclosures designed around island themes, letting you get closer to wildlife than you'd expect in a British zoo setting. You're walking through recreated habitats where big cats, primates, and birds roam spaces that feel less cramped than traditional zoo setups, though you'll still be behind barriers.

It's brilliant for families with younger kids who want to see lions and tigers without the trek to Africa. Older children might lose interest after a couple of hours unless they're seriously into animal behaviour. The whole experience works well as a half-day activity, especially if you're based at one of the caravan parks near Chester - Chester Fairoaks or Fir Trees are both within a few miles, making it an easy morning or afternoon out.

The zoo charges admission (standard zoo pricing applies) and you'll want to budget two to three hours, longer if you're hanging around the feeding times or sitting with the big cats. Summer weekends get properly rammed, so go midweek if you can. The surrounding Chester area has actual history to explore afterwards - the Roman walls and town centre are worth a wander - so you can tie this in with other activities rather than making it a full day commitment.

Walkers won't find much to get excited about here beyond the zoo grounds themselves, and it's not the place for a serious wildlife education. But if you've got restless kids and you're camping nearby, it does the job.
