Cedar House - Chester Zoo

Cedar House is Chester Zoo's big cat enclosure, and it's where the real drama happens. You'll find yourself standing in front of some seriously impressive felines - lions, tigers, leopards - the sort of animals that make you understand instantly why they deserve respect. The building itself is designed to let you get a proper look without the glass feeling like a barrier, which means decent photography opportunities if that's your thing.

Families with younger kids tend to gravitate here early in the morning when the cats are more active. Older children and adults who care about conservation messaging will find the education panels genuinely informative rather than patronising. You're looking at 45 minutes to an hour if you're not rushing, longer if the animals are in a cooperative mood.

It's a free section within Chester Zoo's main admission, so you're not paying extra. The location between Chester and Flintshire makes it handy whether you're based at Chester Fairoaks Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Oakwood Farm Touring Park - both are within a few miles. Cedar House works well as a morning or late afternoon stop rather than a full-day destination on its own. If the cats are asleep - and big cats do sleep roughly 16 hours a day - don't take it personally. Come back later or accept you've got a decent excuse to explore the rest of the zoo instead.
