The Hills

From Newtown, it's a steady climb through traditional Derbyshire drystone wall country. The path isn't waymarked, so you'll need decent navigation skills and an OS map - this isn't one for beginners. Once up top, though, the 360-degree views take in the White Peak's characteristic limestone plateau stretching toward Hartington.

Walkers seeking solitude will love this place. It's refreshingly uncommercialized compared to the honeypot peaks further south. The going underfoot can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are essential. Allow three hours for the round trip from the nearest parking.

For those staying at nearby parks like Peak Glamping Hideaway or Bank House Farm Campsite, it makes a lovely morning walk before the weather turns. Kids over eight should manage it fine, though bring snacks - there's nothing here except grass, sheep, and gloriously empty countryside.
