Aldery Cliff

Standing 1,519 feet above sea level, this rocky outcrop delivers proper Peak District views without the crowds you'll find at the more famous tors. The short but steep climb from the nearest road rewards you with sweeping panoramas across the limestone plateau - on a clear day you can spot the distinctive profile of Chrome Hill to the northwest.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from Aldery Cliff, though it's not one for families with very young children given the exposed rocky sections near the summit. The approach involves crossing typical Peak District farmland before the final scramble up weathered limestone. Allow around an hour for the round trip from wherever you manage to park - finding a suitable spot near Newtown can be the trickiest part of the whole expedition.

Free to access year-round, though spring and early summer offer the best conditions when the surrounding moorland bursts into colour. The cliff makes a decent half-day addition to a Peak District holiday, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Longnor Wood Holiday Park or the glamping options around Buxton. Just don't expect facilities or marked paths - this is proper countryside rambling where you'll need to rely on your map-reading skills and common sense.
