The Hall Wood

The Hall Wood sits just outside Dunmow as a proper working forest where you can actually wander through without feeling herded along a designated trail. It's the sort of place where you might stumble across fallen logs perfect for balancing, a small stream cutting through the trees, or just the decent quiet that's become rare in Essex. The woodland itself is dense enough to feel like a real escape - oak, ash, and birch mostly - though don't expect dramatic vistas or ancient monuments.

Walkers get the most from it, especially those who don't need a circular route with a café at the end. Families with restless kids might find thirty minutes enough before boredom sets in, unless they're the type who'll spend hours turning sticks into swords and building camps. The forest floor is uneven and sometimes boggy depending on the season, so proper boots are wise. Spring and early autumn are best - summer can feel a bit thick and overrun with insects, winter just muddy.

It works well as a morning walk before settling into Dairymeade Farm Glamping five miles away for the evening. If you're staying in the area and want something low-key that actually feels like a forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, it's worth the drive from Dunmow. Admission is free. Allow an hour at most unless you're genuinely after a longer ramble, in which case you can extend deeper into the woodland.
