The Groe

The Groe sits just outside Builth Wells in Powys, a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight for Mid Wales. It's woodland and riverbank habitat rolled into one - the kind of place where you're genuinely likely to spot kingfishers if you're patient, and where the Irfon River does most of the work making it feel alive. You're not looking at formal gardens or visitor centres here. This is walking country, the sort where you follow paths through native trees and hope the light hits the water at the right moment.

It works best for people who actually enjoy a quiet walk without expecting tea rooms at the end of it. Birdwatchers will get hours out of it; families with restless kids under twelve might find it a bit slim on entertainment after a decent walk. There's something satisfying about its lack of fuss though - no entry fees, no queuing, just you and the riverside.

Allow a couple of hours if you're a proper explorer, or 45 minutes if you're just taking a riverside stroll. The best time is early morning when the birds are vocal and you've got the place to yourself. It fits nicely with a base at Penmaenau Farm Camping or Celtic Woodland Holidays, both minutes away - crack spots for accessing the reserves and walking routes around Builth Wells without the tourist traffic of more famous spots.
