The Glenrothes Distillery

You'll smell the Glenrothes before you even walk through the door - that warm, sweet, grain-heavy scent that tells you there's serious whisky-making happening inside. It's in Rothes, deep in Moray's whisky heartland, and this distillery is one of the few that actually lets you see how they turn barley into the stuff people queue for at duty-free.

The tour takes you through the whole process: the copper stills that look like they've been there since the Victorian era (because they basically have), the warehouse where the magic of maturation happens in oak casks, and finally the tasting room where it all makes sense. The staff know their stuff without being snobby about it, which is refreshing in the world of single malts.

If you're staying at Cairnty Lodges down the road - and those hot tub pods are a serious draw after a long day exploring - you're perfectly placed for a distillery morning. Two or three hours covers it properly without feeling rushed. It's not a theme park experience; you're genuinely learning something about how whisky gets made, which means it works best for people who actually care about that. Kids will find it dull unless they're teenagers with a genuine interest.

Worth going out of your way for? If you're already in Moray, absolutely. If you're just passing through, maybe pair it with a few other distilleries in the area - you're spoilt for choice round here. The tasting at the end is generous.
