About Speyburn Distillery
The tour takes you through the whole process - malt, copper stills, the lot - and the guides actually know their stuff without being annoyingly preachy about it. You'll smell the spirit vapours (proper strong, that), see where the magic happens, then taste what they've made. The core range is solid, nothing flashy, which somehow makes it more interesting.
Allow two to three hours if you're doing a proper tour and tasting. Book ahead - they're not enormous. It's free entry if you just want to wander the visitor area and shop, but the tour itself costs a few quid and is worth doing. Whisky enthusiasts will get the most from it, but honestly, even if you're not a devotee, the working distillery atmosphere beats the polished visitor centres hands down.
Base yourself at Cairnty Lodges just four miles away - those hot tub pods are exactly what you want after a morning of distillery touring. Rothes itself is tiny but has decent pubs for an evening dram. Combine this with a walk along the Spey Valley and you've got a proper Speyside weekend sorted.
