Speyburn

The moment you walk into Speyburn, you're hit with that unmistakable smell - sweet barley, peat smoke, and something else you can't quite put your finger on. It's a proper working distillery just outside Rothes in Moray, and they take their whisky seriously here.

You get to see the whole process if you do a tour: the copper stills gleaming under industrial lights, the warehouses where thousands of casks sit quietly doing their thing, and finally the tasting room where you actually get to try what they've made. The guides know their stuff and aren't afraid to geek out about ABV percentages and cask finishes. If whisky terminology makes your head spin, don't worry - they pitch it at visitors as well as enthusiasts.

Allow a good two hours if you're doing the full experience, though you can just visit the shop and sample a dram without booking a tour. It's worth checking their website first for current opening hours and to book ahead - they do fill up, particularly in summer.

If you're staying at Cairnty Lodges down the road, this makes an excellent afternoon out. A couple of hours here, then back to the hot tub afterwards hits different. Kids under 18 won't get the tasting side of things, but the process itself is interesting enough. The shop is decent too if you want to pick up a bottle or two as a souvenir. Not a whisky drinker? Honestly, the setting and the tour alone make it worthwhile.
