The Garrison Memorial Church of St Martin and St Oswald

The stone church sits on a rise above Leyburn, its twin towers making it impossible to miss as you drive through the market town. St Martin and St Oswald is properly Victorian - all red sandstone and confident angles - built as the Garrison Church when the barracks stood nearby. What strikes you walking inside is how light it feels, despite the heavy masonry. The interior's surprisingly ornate for a military chapel: decent stained glass, proper carved woodwork, and a real sense that this wasn't knocked up on the cheap.

History buffs will want to spend an hour here. The garrison connection is well documented, and there's genuine interest in how the church functioned as the spiritual centre for the soldiers billeted in the area. Families with older kids can appreciate the architecture without it feeling like a chore. Young children might find it a bit static - there's no interactive element, just beautiful old stone and glass.

It's free to visit, assuming the doors are open (best to ring ahead or check locally). Allow thirty to forty minutes to properly look around. The church works well as a stop when you're exploring Leyburn itself - pop in after browsing the market square, then head to one of the surrounding parks for the bulk of your break. Kiplin Country Park and Eastfield Glamping Farm are both within easy reach and genuinely good bases for the Dales. The drive up to Wensleydale from here is proper scenic, and you'll pass through some lovely villages that make the garrison church feel like a natural part of the local story.
