Stonefold Wood

There's something quietly rewarding about walking into Stonefold Wood near Leyburn without any grand expectations. It's proper woodland - the sort where you crunch through leaf litter, spot the occasional fallen branch across the path, and genuinely lose track of time. The trees are mature and dense enough that even on a bright day, there's shade throughout, which makes it ideal for warmer months when everywhere else feels baked.

The wood itself isn't massive, so you're looking at perhaps 45 minutes to an hour for a leisurely loop depending on which routes you fancy. Walkers will get the most from this - it's straightforward forest trails rather than dramatic vistas or scrambles. Children do well here too; the woodland feel is engaging and there's enough room to let them explore without constant anxiety. If you're the type who needs visitor facilities, signage, or a cafe, this isn't your spot. It's a proper bit of countryside that hasn't been packaged up for tourism.

Access appears to be free and open to the public, though you'll want to check locally before heading out. The nearest base would be one of the holiday parks scattered around Leyburn - Sleningford Watermill and Woodhouse Farm are both well-regarded and within a short drive. If you're already planning walks in the Wensleydale area, Stonefold Wood makes a solid half-day addition to your itinerary. Not spectacular, but genuinely pleasant and exactly what a local woodland should be.
