Leyburn

Woolly sheep dot the limestone-scattered fields that roll away from this proper Dales market town like an unfinished jigsaw. Leyburn sits pretty on a ridge above Wensleydale, close enough to the National Park boundary to feel genuinely rural but with enough shops and pubs to avoid that end-of-the-world isolation.

The market square still bustles on Fridays, just as it has for centuries. Local farmers drive down from the higher dales to sell everything from prize-winning cheeses to hand-knitted scarves. It's the real deal - no tourist tat in sight.

Walking is what brings most people here. The surrounding countryside serves up some proper hiking, with Hill Top and Sandy Hill offering cracking views across the dale without requiring mountaineering skills. Limekiln Wood makes for gentler rambles when the weather turns, while the various plantations like Carnagill provide decent shelter on blustery days.

Nearby Catterick adds a military flavour to the area - you'll spot soldiers in the pubs and the Garrison Leisure Centre has a decent pool if you fancy a swim. The golf course at Catterick is well-maintained too, though booking ahead is wise during summer.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The A684 runs right through town, connecting to the A1 about twenty minutes east. Finghall Lane station serves the more remote spots, though most visitors drive.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around the area makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a proper pub dinner, yet far enough out to wake up to nothing but birdsong and the occasional bleat. The surrounding woodland walks like Stone Hag Wood are practically on your doorstep from most sites.
