Limekiln Wood

The woodland path into Limekiln Wood is steep right from the off, so don't expect a gentle meander. This is proper Yorkshire Dales terrain - narrow trails cutting through dense beech and oak, with the occasional limestone outcrop reminding you why the place got its name. The kilns themselves are scattered through the wood, old stone structures half-swallowed by moss and tree roots, dating back to when lime burning was serious business around here.

It's a short walk, maybe 20 minutes into the heart of it, but it packs a punch. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and in autumn the whole thing glows amber and gold. You won't find crowds or facilities - no café, no car park to speak of - which means you get the place more or less to yourself. Families with young kids might struggle with the gradient, but anyone who enjoys a proper woodland ramble will find it worth the drive from Leyburn.

The best time is early morning or late afternoon when the light filters through the canopy in that particular way. Allow an hour to explore properly rather than rushing through. If you're based at Eastfield Glamping Farm just down the road, it's an obvious choice for a morning walk before breakfast. Combine it with a visit to nearby Wensleydale for a fuller day out in the Dales.
