The Down House

The Down House sits just outside Newent in Gloucestershire, a proper period manor that gives you a genuine sense of what life looked like for the gentry in centuries past. It's the kind of place where you can wander the rooms and actually imagine people living there - no velvet ropes or overwrought interpretations, just solid architecture and period detail.

What you'll find depends on opening arrangements, which vary, so check ahead before making the trip. The house itself is the draw here rather than staged experiences or interactive exhibits. If you're into architecture or the way people actually lived - not just the grand public rooms but the working parts of a manor - you'll get something from it. Families with older children who can appreciate historical buildings will find it worth an hour or so. Younger kids might struggle unless they're already keen on that sort of thing.

Newent's close enough that you could easily combine this with exploring the wider area. Several caravan parks within five or six miles - Pelerine and Up Sticks are the nearest - make it viable as a base for a week if you're doing the Gloucestershire circuit. The Forest of Dean isn't far either, so you could string together a few days hitting manor houses, woodland walks, and the usual countryside stuff.

It's not a blockbuster attraction, but if you're already in the area and the doors are open, it's worth the detour. Honest rather than flashy - that's the appeal here.
