The Devon Bird of Prey Centre

Birds of prey circling overhead while you stand on the ground - that's the draw here, and it's genuinely impressive. The Devon Bird of Prey Centre, just outside Newton Abbot, is a working facility where you watch falcons, hawks, and eagles do what they do best. Most visits run two to three hours, which is about right before the repetition sets in.

They run flying displays throughout the day, and these are the real highlight. Seeing a peregrine falcon dive at speed or a massive golden eagle launch from the glove is properly thrilling, especially if this is your first time watching it happen in person. The staff know their stuff and explain the birds' behaviour without talking down to you.

Kids aged five upwards will be engaged, though younger children might find it a bit long if they're not bird-obsessed already. Photographers should bring a decent zoom lens - the light can be tricky depending on the time of day. Walkers and nature types who've spent the morning on Dartmoor (less than half an hour away) could easily slot this in as an afternoon stop.

It's worth checking ahead for opening times and admission fees before you go. If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Dornafield is less than half a mile away - it's close enough to pop back and forth without hassle. On a clear day when the birds are flying well, you'll leave pleased you came. On a drizzly afternoon when displays are cancelled, less so.
