Berry's Wood Hillfort

Iron Age folk built this hillfort properly, and you can still make out the defensive ditches and ramparts snaking across the high ground near Newton Abbot. It's not some obvious tourist trap - more a case of reading the landscape itself, spotting where ancient people chose to live and how they fortified it against whatever threats kept them up at night two thousand years ago.

The site rewards a decent walk. You'll need to find your own way in, which means decent boots and a bit of local knowledge or a map. The views across Dartmoor from up there are genuinely worth the effort, though - the kind of vista that makes you understand why someone picked this spot to settle. Archaeology types will get the most from it. Kids might find it a bit abstract, unless they're already keen on Iron Age life and can visualize what stood here.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of. It's free, and you can visit any time. Allow a couple of hours if you're coming from Newton Abbot - that includes travel time and a decent mooch around once you're up there.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Dornafield or The Smithy, this works as a half-day excursion to break up park time. Pair it with a walk on Dartmoor proper, which starts close by. Not a blockbuster attraction, but solid stuff if Iron Age settlement patterns actually interest you.
