The Canal

The Canal near Market Rasen is one of those places that doesn't announce itself loudly, but rewards you for turning up. We're talking about a proper waterway - flat, reflective stretches lined with towpath walking that's genuinely peaceful for the East Midlands. No locks and weirs to slow you down, just mile after mile of surprisingly rural water that feels worlds away from the A46.

You won't find theme park attractions here. What you get is straightforward water-based recreation: walking the towpath (it's excellent, properly maintained), cycling if you've brought bikes, or simply sitting by the water with a flask and a good book. Birdwatchers do well - herons, grebes, and various ducks are regular sightings. The light reflection on water here is genuinely lovely in late afternoon.

It's ideal for families wanting a gentle afternoon out without paying entrance fees, though I'd be honest - young kids after intense stimulation might get restless after an hour or so. Adults, walkers, and anyone keen on canal-side cycling will find real value. The towpath is accessible and flat, making it manageable for most fitness levels.

If you're staying at Wolds View Country Park, which sits just under 6 miles away, this makes a fine half-day escape. Pop into Market Rasen for lunch afterwards - the town itself is decent enough without being remarkable. Allow two to three hours for a proper exploration of the canal sections, depending on how far you fancy walking.
