The Big Meadow

The Big Meadow is a proper working nature reserve just outside Alcester, where you can actually see what happens when you let land recover properly. It's grassland that's being managed for wildlife - the kind of place where a walk in spring or early summer reveals wildflowers most people have forgotten exist, and the birds kick up a real racket in the nesting season.

What makes it different from your average meadow stroll is the access. You can walk the perimeter or cut across designated paths, and there's genuine reward in spotting what's living here - butterflies, ground-nesting birds, the sort of insects that vanish when farmers plough everything under. It's not dramatic or challenging terrain, just honest grassland walking with real ecological purpose behind it.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will get far more from this than casual visitors. Bring binoculars if you've got them, and decent boots after rain - it can be proper boggy in places. The walk takes maybe an hour unless you're serious about bird watching, in which case you could lose half a day here.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Orchard Lodge is right on the doorstep - this fits nicely into a broader Warwickshire countryside circuit. It's free, it's unglamorous, and it works precisely because nobody's overthinking it. Worth the trip if you actually care about wildlife. If you want manicured gardens and visitor facilities, look elsewhere.
