Ralphs Wood

A woodland walk through proper Warwickshire countryside, Ralphs Wood sits just outside Alcester and delivers exactly what you'd hope for - ancient trees, a decent network of paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get near town centres. The reserve is small enough that you won't spend hours here, but large enough to feel like a genuine escape rather than a glorified park loop.

Walkers will find the most value in it. The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent tree coverage, making it solid for autumn rambles when the light filters through nicely. If you're staying at Orchard Lodge just down the road, it's practically on your doorstep - brilliant for morning strolls before breakfast or a leg-stretch after a day's driving. Families with young children will manage it fine, though there's nothing here to keep them entertained for hours. Older kids who actually enjoy walking through trees rather than moaning about it will be content.

Birders should bring binoculars. The reserve attracts woodland birds year-round, and spring migration season is worth timing a visit around if you're that way inclined. It's free to access and there's no official visitor centre, so just show up and find the entrance. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a proper walk rather than a quick circuit.

The wood works best as part of a broader Warwickshire countryside loop - Welford Riverside Park and Ranch Caravan Park are close by if you're caravan-based - but it's worth the detour whether you're staying locally or just passing through Alcester.
