The Archway

Three miles west of Sheffield city centre, this contemporary gallery occupies a striking converted Victorian railway arch. The space itself is properly dramatic - those soaring brick curves create an atmospheric backdrop for rotating exhibitions of local and regional artists.

You're looking at mainly contemporary work here, though the programming varies considerably. During my visit, a mixed show of Sheffield sculptors shared space with photography from the Peak District. The curved walls work brilliantly for certain pieces, less so for others.

Art enthusiasts will find enough to justify the trip, particularly if you're already exploring the western edges of Sheffield. Families might struggle unless there's something specifically child-friendly on - the space can feel quite serious and gallery-like rather than interactive.

Allow about an hour for a thorough look, though you could easily spend less if the current exhibition doesn't grab you. The setting alone makes it worth a quick detour if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like High Lea Farm or Ingfield Farm - both are within a couple of miles and make decent bases for exploring this part of South Yorkshire.

Whether it's worth a special journey depends entirely on what's showing. Check ahead if possible, though even without knowing the programme, the building itself has enough character to make a brief stop worthwhile for anyone with even a passing interest in contemporary art.
