Thaxted URC Church

The tower of Thaxted URC Church rises above the Essex countryside like something from a medieval postcard, and it's properly worth the detour if you're staying in the area around Saffron Walden. This is a fifteenth-century church with real character - the kind of place where you can spend twenty minutes wandering around and actually feel the age of it all without any of the velvet ropes or gift shop nonsense.

Admission is free - just turn up - though obviously respect the opening times and if there's a service on, that's not your moment for a poke around. It sits well as a stop-off between Readers Field Glamping or Hill Farm if you're doing a country break in this corner of Essex. Saffron Walden's close enough if you need proper facilities, but the church itself is reason enough to venture out.
