Ten Acre Wood

Ten Acre Wood sits just outside Richmond and delivers exactly what it promises - a proper woodland walk without the pretence. It's the sort of place where you can actually breathe, wander the forest paths, and not feel like you're following a queue of tourists with selfie sticks.

The wood itself is straightforward: mixed woodland with established trees, muddy trails that get worse after rain, and enough space to lose yourself for an hour or two without needing a map. It works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Usha Gap Farm is barely a mile away, making this an easy morning jaunt before a cooked breakfast. Walkers will appreciate the natural terrain, though it's nothing technically challenging. Families with young kids find it decent enough, though there's not much in the way of formal attractions or play equipment - it's real woodland, not a manicured country estate.

Go when the ground's relatively dry if you can manage it. The paths become proper boggy in winter, which is either part of the charm or utterly miserable depending on your wellies situation. Allow a solid hour or ninety minutes to do it properly rather than race through.

Pair it with Richmond itself - the town's worth a proper look, with its castle and riverside setting - or combine it with walks across Swaledale when the weather's decent. It's not the most remarkable woodland in Yorkshire, but it's reliable, free, and genuinely quiet. That counts for something.
