Hood Rigg

Hood Rigg sits just south of Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales, a proper fell rather than a dramatic peak, but that's exactly why it works so well. At 1,430 feet, it's the sort of hill that rewards a brisk walk without demanding fell-running fitness or technical gear. The views from the top sweep across Swaledale and the surrounding farmland - nothing earth-shattering, but on a clear day you'll see exactly why people choose to camp in this part of the world.

This is a straightforward ascent, best tackled from Richmond itself, though there's no single "official" trail marked like you'd find at more famous peaks. That's part of the charm, honestly. Walkers will appreciate the gentle gradient and open access, and families with older kids looking to bag their first Dales hill couldn't do much better - you're talking ninety minutes up and back without drama. Time it for late afternoon and you'll have the hill largely to yourself, with long light across the valleys. No facilities at the summit, no cafe, no crowds. Which might be exactly the point.
