White Beacon Hill

The walk up White Beacon Hill rewards you with one of the finest views across Wensleydale and the surrounding Yorkshire Dales. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a proper fell walk than a scramble - but the panorama from the top justifies every step, especially on a clear day when you can pick out distant ridges and the patchwork of stone walls stitching the valleys together.

This is ideal territory for walkers who want something more substantial than a stroll but aren't after technical terrain. The hill sits near Richmond, making it accessible for a morning or afternoon outing, and it pairs well with time spent at any of the nearby campsites - Usha Gap Farm, Cherish Glamping, or Stablefell Holidays all put you within striking distance. The walk itself takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and where you start from, so plan accordingly.

Family groups will find it manageable, though younger legs might flag on the ascent. History enthusiasts get a bonus: the hill has Bronze Age roots and the views alone tell you why this high ground mattered. There's something about standing up there with nothing but moorland and fell stretching out that makes you understand why people chose these spots.

Free to visit, as with most Yorkshire peaks. Go early if you can - the summit can get busy with day-trippers, and morning light does something rather special to the Dales. Midweek is markedly quieter than weekends.
