Temple Hill

The walk up Temple Hill near Waltham Cross isn't exactly a Alpine challenge, but it does offer something that's rare in this corner of Hertfordshire - a genuine viewpoint. The summit sits at a modest elevation, yet from the top you get a proper sense of the Lee Valley spreading out below, and on a clear day the views stretch far enough to make the short climb worthwhile.

It's the sort of place where walkers genuinely outnumber casual visitors. The terrain is straightforward - mostly woodland paths that take around thirty minutes to reach the peak - so families with younger kids won't struggle, though the payoff is more about the walk itself than any dramatic landscape reveal. History buffs might be mildly interested in whatever structure once stood here (the 'temple' connection suggests something archaeological), though information on the ground is sparse.

Free to visit, obviously. The real value is as part of a longer ramble through the Lee Valley rather than a standalone destination. If you're staying at Lee Valley Campsite in Sewardstone or any of the other caravan parks dotted around the area - Fowley Mead is closest at 2.8 miles - Temple Hill makes a decent morning or afternoon circuit. Best to go early, particularly weekends, as the narrow paths can get congested. The woodland keeps things cool in summer, which counts for something.

Worth the detour if you're in the region? Absolutely. A reason to travel specifically? Probably not.
