Telham Hill

The walk up Telham Hill takes about twenty minutes from Battle, and it's genuinely worth the leg work. You're climbing toward a proper vantage point over the Sussex weald - the kind of view that makes you understand why this corner of England matters historically. On a clear day you can see for miles across rolling farmland, and on a grey one it's moody and atmospheric.

It's not a dramatic peak. There's no summit building or dramatic rock formation, just open countryside and the satisfaction of being higher than the town below. The path is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might grumble about the climb. Most people spend thirty minutes to an hour at the top before heading back down.

Historically this is where the 1066 story played out. The Norman invasion site sits just over there - if you know the context, standing here gives you a genuine sense of place rather than just reading about it in a textbook. History buffs will get more from it than casual walkers, though the views alone justify the trip.

If you're staying at Beech Estate Campsite or Seven Acre Woods nearby, this makes an excellent morning walk before you head elsewhere. It's free, there are no opening hours to worry about, and you can do it in a couple of hours including the drive from your holiday park. Go early if the weather's decent - the views are clearer and you'll have the hill mostly to yourself.
