Telegraph Hill

The highest point in Norfolk sounds like it should be dramatic, and Telegraph Hill does deliver - though you're not scaling a mountain here. At just over 100 metres, this isn't Ben Nevis, but from the summit near Holt you get proper views across the Norfolk countryside and towards the coast on a clear day.

It's a straightforward walk up, good for families who want to say they've "climbed" something without needing mountaineering kit. The hill has ancient roots - a windmill once stood here, and the name itself hints at its past as a communication point. Nothing particularly fancy at the top, just open space and the satisfaction of having reached it.

Walkers and history buffs will find it worthwhile; young kids might feel a bit underwhelmed unless you make it part of a longer ramble through the surrounding area. The walk is gentle enough that you could stretch it to an hour and still not be knackered.

If you're staying at Kelling Heath Holiday Park just down the road, or any of the other caravan sites dotted around this part of North Norfolk - West Runton, Beeston Regis, Woodlands - Telegraph Hill makes a decent morning outing before lunch. It's free, obviously, and accessible year-round. Go when the weather's settled; on a grey, damp Norfolk day the views don't really justify the trek. Worth the detour if you're in Holt anyway, less so if it's a special trip.
