Tegg's Nose Country Park

There's a proper vantage point up on Tegg's Nose where you can see right across the Cheshire Plain and into the Peak District beyond. It's a sandstone ridge just outside Macclesfield, and on a clear day the views justify the walk up. The name comes from a local lad called Tegg who was apparently quite the character - the stories vary depending who you ask in the pubs round here.

It's mainly a walker's destination. The paths are well-maintained and there's genuine moorland feel to it, which feels rarer than it should be this close to a proper town. You're looking at maybe an hour to ninety minutes for a decent circuit depending on your pace. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find it a bit steep for what is essentially a lump of high ground. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no stone monuments or towers, just open moorland and that expansive view.

The park's free to access, which is always a bonus. Go on a weekday if you can, because weekends bring the lot up from Manchester. Early autumn is cracking - clear skies, less mud, and the gorse is often still flowering.

It works well as a half-day stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Eastwood End or Kiss wood cabins. Both are within spitting distance, which means you can do the walk without eating into a full day. If you're the sort who likes a proper walk with something to look at rather than another woodland loop, Tegg's Nose delivers.
