Tealing Stones

Standing in a field near Forfar, the Tealing Stones are what's left of a Neolithic stone circle - just two uprights and a few recumbent slabs scattered across the grass. It's not dramatic in the way of Stonehenge, but there's something genuinely moving about the placement. Someone bothered to drag these rocks here five thousand years ago, and they're still standing. You can walk right up to them, touch the stone if you fancy it, and actually think about the hands that shaped them.

History types will find it worthwhile, though it's not a day-long activity. Thirty minutes on site, maybe an hour if you're taking photos or sketching. The surrounding countryside is pleasant rolling Aberdeenshire farmland - good for a walk if you're staying nearby, but you'll want to pair it with other attractions rather than make a special trip. The nearest town is Forfar, which gives you access to shops and cafes if needed.

If you're based at Greenhillock Glamping just down the road, it's absolutely worth the short drive. Combine it with a broader exploration of the local archaeology - the area has Bronze Age cairns and other sites that reward a bit of wandering. Free to visit, naturally. Best in decent weather when the ground isn't waterlogged. Go early morning if you want the place to yourself.
