Tatton Coppice

A stretch of woodland just outside Weymouth that feels properly removed from the seaside crowds, even though you're only minutes away. Tatton Coppice is the sort of place locals know but tourists miss - which is exactly why it's worth the short detour from your caravan.

It's woodland walking territory, dense enough to feel like actual forest despite being relatively modest in size. The paths wind through established trees with that particular Dorset mix of oak and beech, and it's the kind of spot where you can genuinely lose the beach-park atmosphere if you need a break from it. You won't find formal facilities or interpretive boards - it's just you, the trees, and enough quiet to remember why forests are rather good.

Walkers will get the most from this. Young kids might manage shorter routes if they're decent on their feet, but it's not a destination for pushchairs or toddlers wanting play equipment. Bring boots if it's been wet. There's no admission charge as far as anyone can tell - it's simply a working piece of Dorset woodland you can wander through.

Give it forty minutes to an hour if you're based at Bagwell Farm or East Fleet Farm - both are practically on the doorstep. Chesil Beach Lodge Park is only a bit further and well worth your base for the week anyway. It's not a major attraction, but if you're camped nearby and fancy a proper walk among actual trees rather than along the seafront, Tatton Coppice does exactly what it says. Straightforward, unpretentious, and worth knowing about.
