Tatteridge

From Ludlow, it's a straightforward walk up to Tatteridge - a modest peak that gives you proper views across the borderlands without breaking a sweat. The walk itself is the main event here; the summit isn't dramatic or particularly high, but on a clear day you get a real sense of the Shropshire Hills rolling away to the north and the Welsh hills catching light to the west.

This is walker's territory, pure and simple. It's not a place for a lengthy stop - twenty minutes at the top and you've seen what there is to see - but it works brilliantly as part of a longer loop around the area. Families with reasonable legs will manage it without complaint, though there's nothing to keep younger kids entertained once they reach the top. History buffs won't find much here; it's landscape rather than landmark.

The real draw is using Tatteridge as a waypoint on a bigger walk. Combine it with other peaks in the Ludlow area and you've got yourself a proper day out. Staying at one of the nearby campsites - Ludlow Touring & Holiday Home Park is closest at under six miles - gives you a base to explore the wider Shropshire Hills without the bother of moving accommodation. Monstay Farm Campsite and Glamping is nearer if you're after something more casual.

Go on a bright morning when the air is clear. Late afternoon light here is lovely but you'll lose the views quickly. Allow an hour for a return walk, more if you're linking it with other routes.
