Tasker Wood

The woodland around Tasker Wood, just outside Tadcaster, is proper walking country - the sort of place where you can lose a couple of hours without trying. It's a mixed forest with decent paths that meander through stands of mature trees, and it genuinely feels like you've stepped away from things even though you're only minutes from town.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths are manageable enough for families with older kids, though little ones might struggle with muddy patches after rain. There's no formal visitor centre or facilities that we could find, so come prepared - bring water and maybe pack a sandwich if you're planning a longer ramble. The place has an unpretentious, working-woodland feel about it rather than being set up as a manicured attraction.

If you're based at Wighill Park Glamping or Cawood Park - both genuinely excellent spots just a few miles away - Tasker Wood makes a solid morning or afternoon outing to break up a park holiday. You won't be overwhelmed by crowds, which is refreshing. Allow two hours if you want to properly explore without rushing, though you could do a quick 45-minute loop if time's tight.

Best visited in late spring or early autumn when the paths aren't boggy and midges aren't a complete nightmare. It won't set your pulse racing, but it's a solid piece of Yorkshire woodland that rewards a quiet walk.
