Wetherby Leisure Centre sits just outside Tadcaster and is the sort of place you'll appreciate if you've got restless kids or you're keen on a proper workout while on holiday. It's a full-service sports facility with a swimming pool, gym, and courts for badminton and other activities - the kind of thing you'd find in most market towns across Yorkshire, but done competently.

The pool is the real draw here, especially if you're stopping at one of the nearby caravan parks like Wighill Park Glamping or Haighfield Holiday Park nearby. Families with younger children will find it useful for burning off energy on a rainy afternoon, and it's considerably less crowded than the tourist attractions dotted around Harrogate. If you're a swimmer rather than a sightseer, the lap sessions are worth checking the timetable for.

It's not a destination in itself - don't plan your Yorkshire holiday around it - but if you're basing yourself at Moor Lodge or another of the parks within a few miles, it's handy to know about. The gym appeals more to serious fitness types than casual holidaymakers. Opening hours and admission fees do vary, so ring ahead before you go.

Better as a rainy-day backup than a main attraction. Gives you something to do other than walking and cream teas.
