Talkin Tarn

A shallow glacial lake sat between bare fells about ten minutes south of Carlisle - that's Talkin Tarn, and it's exactly the sort of place you'd stumble across on a walk rather than plan a day around. The water itself is calm and reed-fringed, backed by bracken slopes that turn copper in autumn. There's a decent footpath looping the whole thing, maybe two miles at an easy pace, and the views aren't showy but they're proper restful.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's the kind of spot where you can clear your head without needing to crack the fitness goals - the terrain is gentle, the circuit achievable for anyone reasonably mobile. Families with young children will manage the walk fine, though there's not much else to hold their attention once they've done the loop. History buffs won't find much; it's geology and landscape that matter here.

You can get round in ninety minutes comfortably, longer if you're taking photos or sitting by the water. No facilities that I could see, so bring what you need. Free to access - no car park charges that I noticed.

It works well as a half-day add-on if you're basing yourself at Englethwaite Hall Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, which sits six miles away. Good option for a morning walk before heading elsewhere in the Lakes, but don't expect drama. It's quiet, it's walkable, and that's exactly what makes it worth the detour.
