Sydera Wood

Deep woodland walks don't come more straightforward than Sydera Wood, a proper forest stretch just outside Dornoch in the Highlands. You're looking at mixed woodland with decent trails that wind through the trees, the kind of place where you can actually breathe properly after spending time in busier tourist spots. The paths are manageable without being boring, and there's enough cover that even when it's drizzling - which, let's be honest, it often is up here - you don't immediately regret leaving the car.

It's ideal for walkers who want something low-key rather than a full mountain expedition. Families with kids who can manage a mile or two will get on fine here too, though there's not much in the way of dramatic views or play facilities. You won't spend more than an hour or ninety minutes unless you really dawdle, so it works as a morning detour rather than a full day out.

Bring proper boots because the ground can be bog-prone after rain, which is most of the time. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no visitor centre or facilities worth mentioning. If you're staying at Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park or Dornoch Firth Caravan Park - both solid options within a couple of miles - this makes a decent rainy-day alternative to driving further afield. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's a proper use of an afternoon when you're based locally.
