St Michael's Well

There's a rather atmospheric medieval well tucked away near Dornoch, and if you're into the kind of history that doesn't come with a visitor centre or gift shop, St Michael's Well is worth seeking out. It's an old stone structure - the sort of place that medieval pilgrims would have stopped at to drink fresh water and presumably say a prayer or two - and there's something genuinely compelling about standing at a spot that's been important to people for centuries.

The well itself is fairly modest in scale, which is rather the point. You're not looking at dramatic ruins or sweeping architecture here; you're looking at layers of time that people actually used. History types and archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from a visit, particularly if you've got an interest in medieval pilgrimage routes and how ordinary people moved through the landscape back then. It's also a decent spot for a quiet walk if you're based in Dornoch.

It's free to visit and takes maybe twenty minutes unless you're the sort to sit with it for longer. Go whenever the weather's decent - there's no shelter, so a wet afternoon isn't ideal. If you're staying at Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park, it's barely half a mile away, making it an easy morning stroll before heading elsewhere.
